Joanna Beall Westermann, Woodsman from Gary, c. 1967
For the first time in more than two decades, New Yorkers get a solo show celebrating artist Joanna Beall Westermann (1935-1997). The Upper East Side gallery Venus Over Manhattan hosts (it opened Tuesday) with a range of Westermann's pioneering paintings, drawings, and collages.
The work reflects Westermann's studies with Josef Albers and Diego Rivera and often displays a surrealist wit. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10am-6pm, with masks, social distancing, and limited capacity in effect. Pictured above, Woodsman from Gary, c. 1967, oil on canvas.
