Venus Over Los Angeles Celebrates Daniel Fuller
Tuesday August 11, 5 – 8pm
Venus Over Los Angeles is pleased to celebrate professional surfer Daniel Fuller, and his new body of photographs titled Liquid Horizon on Tuesday, August 11th, from 5 – 8pm. The works will be on view through August 29th.
Fuller is one of the most respected and best-known surfers in the world. Widely recognized for his mastery of the famous Banzai Pipeline on the north shore of O’ahu, he has also been an invited participant in the Quiksilver Eddie Aikau Invitational, the famous big wave competition that is only held when the face of the waves attain 30 feet. Fuller has also been featured surfing in commercial projects realized by Academy Award winning director, Kathryn Bigelow.
For the past 15 years Fuller has also pursued a second career in photography, documenting the seascapes he has encountered while travelling the globe. Relying on little aside from his medium format camera and the lunar calendar, Fuller often works at night, using the moonlight to capture the rich gradations of color and harmonious lines generated by the ocean vistas. Shot with an exposure time ranging from a few minutes up to an hour, Fuller’s images both convey and encapsulate the continuous motion of waves and sky, incorporating them into a single visual entity.
Fuller’s photography communicates his physical relationship with the water as well as his spiritual tie to the sport of surfing to which he has dedicated his life. Influenced by artists such as William Turner, Mark Rothko, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, he captures the horizon as both a participant and an observer.
Born in Hanalei, Kauai, Daniel Fuller splits his time between Hawaii and Los Angeles.
