Watch: The Trailer for Upcoming Maurizio Cattelan Documentary

By Ann Binlot

This week, Maurizio Cattelan, the artist who is known for his irreverent pieces will open a survey of his work at two venues, Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery tonight, and on November 7 at Venus Over Manhattan. The exhibition was curated by Venus Over Manhattan gallerist Adam Lindemann, is Cattelan’s first major show since his 2011 retrospective at the Guggenheim. Entitled Cosa Nostra, the show takes on two distinct personalities at each venue; at S|2, visitors will be immersed in his images, while at Venus Over Manhattan, the works will be isolated.

The show will feature taxidermied animals — the artist famously presented taxidermied pigeons during the 1997 Venice Biennale. "Our title of Cosa Nostra refers to Maurizio's Italian roots and sensibility, as well as to my confidence in him,” said Lindemann in a release. “It's also a wink to S|2 and Venus's collaboration on this exciting double show." Lindemann will also be featured in the upcoming documentary on the artist. For nearly 15 years, filmmaker Maura Axelrod has been capturing the antics of the Cattelan, and the results are the upcoming documentary film Maurizio Cattelan: The Movie, which will be released next year. Cosa Nostra will be on view at Venus Over Manhattan through January 10, 2015, and at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery until November 26, 2014.
