Peter Saul's Disruptive Paintings Will Take over the New Museum in NYC

Following his collaborative exhibition with artist Erik Parker at NANZUKA in Japan, seminal artist Peter Saul will be the focus of a major survey hosted by the New Museum early next year. Entitled “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment,” the sprawling presentation will chronicle Saul’s prolific fine art career with over six paintings.

Saul is widely-recognized for his disruptive figurations across oil and acrylic on canvas works while injecting images from pop culture including cartoon characters such as Donald Duck and Superman. Although brightly-colored and cartoonish his works may appear, the artist tends to shed light on serious socio-political issues such as “the dissolution of 1960s counterculture and the corruption, racism, and greed of US politics,” the museum said in a statement. “This madcap formula has allowed the artist to critique art historical pretensions while addressing the outsized characters and realities of his day,” the museum adds.
