Only NY Celebrates Peter Saul's Legacy With Surreal Apparel Collection
In partnership with the New Museum.
By Gabrielle Leung
This month, the New Museum launched a major survey of Peter Saul’s work, entitled “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment,” that brings together over 60 paintings from across the artist’s career. To celebrate Saul’s first-ever survey exhibition in New York, Only NY is launching a limited edition apparel collection that features the renowned artist’s original artwork in partnership with the New Museum.
Saul’s pop and surrealist paintings examine serious socio-political issues in a way that is both shocking and humorous. His bold use of color and manipulation of form have solidified Saul’s legacy as a groundbreaking American painter. For the collaborative shirts and sweatshirts, Only NY selected a range of Saul’s work featured in “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment.” Only NY emblazoned Saul’s 1987 self-portrait — a centerpiece of the retrospective — on the front of a gray hoodie, while his signature is found on the back.
Elsewhere, the artist’s Businessman / Young Executive and Stuck were chosen as graphics for the exclusive white, black and pink long sleeves and T-shirts. The paintings showcase Saul’s surrealist fascination with challenging traditional modes of form and composition and ability to bring contradictory themes together.
The Peter Saul collection will be available on Only NY’s website and at the New Museum store starting today at 12 p.m. EST. “Peter Saul: Crime and Punishment” is running from now until May 31.
