Biography

Sophie Larrimore - Artists - Venus Over Manhattan

Sophie Larrimore (b. 1980, Maryland) lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her subjects, both canine and human, serve as delightful conduits for the primary preoccupations of her work—composition, texture, color, and form. In her paintings, Larrimore specifically explores the vital relationship among these elements and delves into the tensions between flat and illusionistic space. She received a B.F.A. from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York, in 2004. Recent solo exhibitions include “Tell Me When We See Each Other Again” at cadet capela, Paris, France (2024); “Cloisters and Oysters” at Venus Over Manhattan, New York, NY (2023); “Please Proceed” at The Pit, Los Angeles, CA (2022); “Desire Path” at Kate Werble Gallery, New York, NY (2021); and “Other Matters” at Situations, New York, NY (2021). Additionally, she has participated in group exhibitions at Tops Gallery, Memphis, TN; Kate Werble Gallery, New York, NY; Harper’s, East Hampton, NY; Jack Hanley Gallery, New York, NY. Larrimore has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Emerging Artist Grant in 2019. Her work has been covered in prestigious magazines such as The New York Times and Artsy.
